Divine Love

Genuine love is pure. It is clothed with divine affection and unaffected by adversity. It is faithful and constant; it delights in mercy, forgiveness and conciliation. It is remorseful in the demise of its opponents. Pure love is divine. David, in today's first reading, is the personification of Caritas and Filial love. David loved Absalom. His tears at the news of the young man's demise were an expression of his fondest memories of Absalom. Love takes no pleasure in the death of its enemies. Its contentment lies in righteousness, justice, justice, peace and conciliation.

Rebellion and hate, on the contrary, stimulate destruction and death. They never vindicate those who make them their consort. Instead, they consume their helpmate. Such was the case of Absalom. However, one man's rebellion and hate is another person's sorrow and tears. Sadly, people, caught in the web of hatred and rebellion forget the divine adage: "Do not judge, and you will not be judged; because the judgments you give are the judgments you will get, and the amount you measure out is the amount you will be given (Matt.7:1-2)." As the old idiom says, "As you make your bed, so shall you lie on it." Absalom sought the death of David, his father; he met his untimely demise and along with him, the innocent, suffered for his fate.

Just a little humility can take us a long way. The two miracles mentioned in today's gospel have many implications for all of us. Our health conditions; not even death can separate us from the love and mercy of our God, provided we humble ourselves in his presence. Once we are humble, God will transform all our human conditions. He will make us whole again. However, the arrogant will court his/her untimely destruction and death.

My Lord and my God, teach me humility, mercy, compassion and love. Grant me the patience to wait for whatever you have in mind for me in this life and in the life to come. Save me from presumption and despair.
