Christ did not abandon us

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Acts 1:1-11/Ps.46:2-3.6-9/Eph.1:17-23/Matt.28:16-20

Christ did not abandon us

God the Father, intended humankind to be part of the divine structure of his kingdom. From the beginning, he made them, male and female, in the likeness of himself. Despite our fallen nature, God adopted us as his sons and daughters. He endowed us with His Holy Spirit and enabled us to function as his begotten children on earth and in his kingdom.

The narratives of Ascension of Christ read like a summation of salvation history. At that junction, Christ Jesus transferred the same power and authority, which the Father gave him to his disciples and apostles and commissioned them to continue the work the Father began in him (Matt.28:19-20; Jn.17:18; 20:21-23).

At the Ascension, Christ did not relinquish his responsibility to save the world. No! He delegated his power and authority to the disciples and apostles to continue the plan God had in mind for him. Thus, he consecrated the disciples and left them in the world as one body with the Father and the Son to continue his work (Jn.17:11). In other words, Christ did not abandon us at the Ascension. Instead, Christ Jesus reinstated the image and likeness of God first gave us at creation (Gen.1:26-28; Ps.8:5). He made us living sacraments of love, mercy, compassion and forgiveness to save the world with him and for him.

O God, keep us faithful to your divine plan of salvation. Never permit us to fall in complacency and negligence.
