The Seeds of the Church

Saints Peter and Paul are my heroes. Their enthusiasm for the gospel and the kingdom inspired my priestly vocation and sense of pastoral ministry. Like Peter and Paul, because I know Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, I do not cower in the face of opposition to the Good News and hostility towards the Mystical Body of Christ.

The Church, I understand, was birthed through the afflictions and death of Christ Jesus and his Apostles. Therefore, I resign myself to imitate Jesus, Peter and Paul that the Good News of salvation will reach the ends of the earth - even if I may have to suffer for it. Jesus never exempted the disciples and apostles from participating in his suffering. When Christ invited his disciples to take up their cross and follow him, he intended them to share in his suffering and death. St. Tertullian introduced us to the saying "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church."

Peter and Paul were founding fathers of the Church. Peter referred to us as living stones building up the body of Christ in the world. By example, the two apostles allowed their bodies to be chipped and shaped through their sufferings to build the Church, and strengthen the faith on earth. By recalling their invaluable contribution to our faith, they continue to challenge us to take our respective Christian calling seriously. Do not be afraid. Imitate Peter and Paul as they imitated Christ in life and death to offer ourselves as living sacrifices unto the Lord. Christ is counting on you and me today.

Saints Peter and Paul, pray for us.
